The YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County is currently accepting entries for the Women in History essay contest. We invite Adams County students in 7th or 8th grade to participate in this contest.

 

Students may write their essays on women who have influenced the national or global community or may write about women whose influence extends within a local community (family, church, town, etc.).  Essays should be 350 to 500 words and focus on the writer’s personal interpretation of the subject’s impact on history.  Essays are due on February 6, 2008.  Click on the link for complete contest guidelines.

 

Awards:

First Place: $100 Savings Bond plus a book awarded to each winner and a second book donated to the winner’s school library.

 

Second Place: $75 Savings Bond

 

Third Place: $50 Savings Bond

 

New this year: Teachers and librarians of participating schools may also be eligible for special awards.

Toni Morrison was the first African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Elizabeth Blackwell was the first licensed woman doctor in the U.S

Nancy Lopez is a champion golfer.
