It is mid-January and we have entered into a particularly challenging stretch of winter and the COVID-19 pandemic. Like so many of us, you are probably seeking a place of refuge, a bit of normalcy and healthy choices at a time when choices have become so limited. I encourage you to consider the many benefits of the pool at the Gettysburg YWCA.
First things first. You will be safe in our building and more specifically, the pool. Our staff are going above and beyond to rigorously clean and sanitize the surfaces in our building. Additionally, the liquid chlorine present in our pool water is a true safeguard from COVID-19. According to the Center For Disease Control (CDC), chlorine deactivates the coronavirus, which in turn, prevents it from spreading. This means we can guarantee your safety while you are in the pool. Face coverings are required on the pool deck and in the locker rooms, but not when you are in the water. As always, we also have a certified Lifeguard on duty at all times.
We have something for everyone! Do you enjoy lap swimming? We have lap lanes available in the mornings and afternoons. Do you want to reap the many benefits of water exercise? We provide the equipment and space for you to do so. Looking for a family activity that is super fun and equally as safe? We have tons of open swim time on the weekends for you and your family to enjoy. Our pool hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
If you miss the thrill of reaching a goal, how about swimming 100 miles? Our 100-Mile Swim Challenge is the perfect way to stay motivated! All levels of swimming abilities are welcome to participate, just record your distance on our white board every time you come in to swim. You’ve got months to complete the journey and the miles all count. We will even be handing out rewards, such as a very cool commemorative t-shirt for everyone who completes the challenge.
In February, we will be ramping our aquatics programming back up as we will be resuming our group swim lessons. Of course, we will be limiting the number of individuals in each class for safety purposes. If you have concerns about being in a group, we also offer private lessons as an alternative for an additional fee. We currently have a promotion for $20 off private lessons in the months of January and February, so now is the most ideal time to sign-up! Rest assured, safety is a priority to our instructors, who will be wearing a face shield while teaching.
Whether you are a veteran swimmer or a beginner, swimming can be a great way to boost your fitness level and reduce stress. While your muscles are getting a good workout, your cardiovascular system is, too. Regular swimming, even just half an hour at a time, is known to be effective for lowering incidences of depression and anxiety and improve sleep patterns. Swimming releases endorphins, the natural feel-good hormones that lead us to experience a greater sense of happiness and well-being.
