Lifeguarding
The American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED that is valid for two years.
Participants must be 15 years old by the last day of class and successfully pass a swimming tryout session to enter the course. This is a blended learning course that combines online learning and in-person learning. Once an individual passes the try-out session, they will complete the 7 hours and 30 minutes of required online coursework and several hours work in the textbook, and attend all in-person skill sessions. The in-person skill sessions will be scheduled for 20 hours.
Pre-requisite Testing
Everyone must successfully meet each component of the pre-requisite skills to determine whether or not they qualify to participate in the course. This session will be held on Friday, April 28, 2023, from 3:30-5:30 pm at the YWCA. There is a non-refundable fee of $25.00 for each candidate. All candidates must be 15 years of age by the last session of the course, which will be on Sunday, May 7, 2023. Proof of age must be shown.

- In under 1 minute and 40 seconds, the candidate must swim 15 meters using freestyle or breaststroke, surface dive to the bottom of 9 feet, bring a 10-pound brick to the surface, and swim to the starting position swimming on the back and holding the brick with both hands with the face out of the water.
- Upon reaching the end of the pool, exit the pool without using the ladder.
